UNION MISSION MINISTRIES - SERVICE PROJECT
introduction
According to Union Mission Ministries (UMM) website, "For 125 years The Union Mission Ministries has compassionately served the least, the last, and the lost in our community including men, women, and children without a home and with nowhere else to turn." As I looked deeper into ideas for my project, I knew this was the place that I wanted to help. I started by contacting their donation coordinator for info on what types of items they needed. After getting a list from them, I enlisted the help of a few groups from my church to help me collect donations. I gave a small presentation about what my project entailed, and what they could do to help. They were more than happy to help, and very quickly I had gathered clothes, food, and other necessities that people had so generously given.
project statement
For this project I am supposed to identify a problem within my community and take action in order to help that problem. Something that I have always felt passionate about is helping those who are homeless. Thus, I'm collecting donations from people in my community, you, and then I will sort the donations and take them to Union Mission Ministries, a homeless shelter in Norfolk, Virginia. The benefits of this project are twofold; we can do something as a church in order to help those around us who are in need. Second, this project is raising awareness about homeless people right here in our own community. I truly hope to help as many people as I can, while raising awareness within my community that this truly is a problem, and that while we might not be able to eradicate it, we can make a difference.
